These 'Gem' cards are the oldest in the collection. Dating from around 1860 to 1880. My estimates are based on clothing fashion, photographers stamps on the back of the cards and also photographic process. Most of these are what is known as Albumen prints. This explains the characteristic yellow tones and faded blacks.
Some of these are taken in Denmark, prior to my relatives leaving for other shores, but some are also taken in America, which shows that brothers and sisters were keeping in touch with each other. Hence why these 100 year old photographs ended up in Rotorua, New Zealand.
